Scottish defender Andy Robertson is considered one of the favorite stars of Liverpool fans
because of his loyalty to the team and his strength towards the opponent’s players, when necessary,
but he regretted a shot in which he infringed on legend Lionel Messi last year.
Robertson became famous for hitting Messi during the famous Liverpool and Barcelona meeting in the Champions League semi-finals,
in which the Reds miraculously won 4-0 to qualify for the final of the tournament.
During a Barcelona attack, Messi was blocked by Liverpool player, Fabien,
for the Scottish defender to come from behind, hitting Messi’s head sitting on the ground, helpless.
But the glorious Scottish defender expressed remorse for that shot,
in his first statement on it, according to the website “Daily Mail”.
“I don’t regret any of my past actions,” said Robertson.
“But I look at my act with Messi in regret.
I don’t like watching it.
When I watched it after the match, it saddened me.”
He added: “We created a sense of challenge for myself and my colleagues during that match,
and we determined that nothing would stand in the way of reaching the final,
which probably prompted me to do so.”
And the Scottish defender confirmed: “The shot did not express me as a person.
This is not my personality.
But that night a lot happened that I don’t remember
I have a lot of respect for Messi and Barcelona.”
The unprovoked shot of Messi sparked controversy at the time,
and many considered it an unacceptable behavior by Robertson,
while the scene delighted Liverpool fans,
who were considered the embodiment of the challenge and ferocity required during that fateful meeting?
