The president of the Italian Football Federation
announced that the first division season may extend to
September or October, warning of a huge litigation wave,
“if the competition was not decided on the field.”
The Serie A suspended since March 9th
because of the Corona virus, which has killed more than
15,000 people in Italy, which is equivalent to almost a
quarter of the global death toll. Some club heads
suggested that the season be canceled altogether.
“The only way to deal with an emergency of this kind is
to complete the competitions of the 2019-2020 season
this year,” Gabriele Gravina, president of the Italian
Federation, told the Dominica Sportiva program on state
television.
Gravina said that on May 17 it is being studied as a
possible date for the contest to resume, but stressed that
this was “just an assumption.”
“We are studying a wide range of possible solutions to
deal with the situation in the best possible way,” he
added.
“Can the season end in September or October? This is
one of the assumptions? It is a way to avoid spoiling not
only the 2019-2020 season but also the 2020-2021
season.”
If the current season canceled, Gravina said, the Italian
federation may suffer from “a litigation wave from
everyone who deemed to harm”.
“We will really risk that the championship competitions
move to the courtrooms,” according to Reuters.
