Juventus goalkeeper Vojcic Chesney remembered
his story with smoking cigarettes, which caused his
departure from his former club Arsenal.
After the Londoners lost to Southampton in the
Premier League in 2015, the 30-year-old Polish
goalkeeper said he was caught in smoking in
the changing room.
The incident caused an outrage among the artillery
coach of the time, the veteran French Arsene
Wenger, who decided to stop him, while the club
management punished him with a fine of 20
thousand pounds sterling.
The aforementioned match saw Chesney’s “last
appearance” in the English Premier League,
where he lost his place and was then seconded
to Italian Roma before moving to Juventus.
“During this period (2015) I used to smoke
regularly, and the coach knew about it. He didn’t
want any player to smoke and I knew that”
Chesney said in comments published by British
newspapers.
He continued: “Because of my feelings after the
match, I smoked a cigarette in the corner of the
shower so that no one would see me.”
Chesney added: “After two days I met him
(Wenger), and he asked me if this was true
(the fact of smoking) and I said yes. Punish
me and that was the end.”
“The coach told me, ‘Listen, you’ll be out of
the team for a while.'”
Chesney said he expected his return in a few
weeks, but then-team-mate, Colombian goalkeeper
David Ospina gave a special performance and
imposed himself essentially in the Arsenal squad,
which prompted Chesney to leave for the Italian
league.
