Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola congratulated Liverpool
and his coach Juergen Klopp after crowning the Premier
League title for the first time in 30 years, but he bemoaned
some of his team’s results at the start of the season, which
allowed his opponent to end the title’s absence from his
treasures.
City needed to win to keep their meager hopes of retaining
the title, but lost 2-1 to its host Chelsea on Thursday, despite
Kevin de Bruyne’s stunning goal from a free kick.
Guardia told a news conference at Stamford Bridge,
“Congratulations to the Liverpool fans, his coach and
his players.
He continued: “This season we lost many points at the
beginning, some of them unfairly, and some of us to make
mistakes, as happened (against Chelsea). We must provide
a stable performance.”
“Two seasons ago we won the title 25 points behind Liverpool
and then the team recovered. Now we have to recover,”
added the 49-year-old.
Christian Policic gave Chelsea a lead before Willian clinched
the victory with a penalty kick after a handball against
Fernandinho.
Guardiola said: “It is not easy to attack Chelsea thanks to
the physical strength of the team. Unfortunately our net was
shaken by mistakes. We played to the end with a strong
character.”
The Spanish coach indicated that he is proud of his team, which
hosts Liverpool in the next round on the second of July and that
its players must learn from mistakes.
“We can say we have won eight of the last 10 titles. This has
never happened before in this country. You cannot win all
the time.”
He continued: “We must understand the matter and feel humble
and say that we cannot win all titles all the time. We must learn
to avoid this situation again.”
