Barcelona continued chasing Real Madrid, the Primera Liga
leaders, after their 1-0 victory over Espanyol on Wednesday,
to ensure that its neighbor fell to the second division.
Luis Suarez scored the match goal in the 56th minute, after
a player from each team sent off early in the second half.
Barcelona striker Anso Fatee sent off for a violent
intervention five minutes after taking a substitute, but
the numerical increase lasted only for three minutes as
Paul Lozano, a Espanyol player, expelled after reviewing
the assistant video rule, “The Mouse”.
Barcelona, who are looking for their third consecutive league
title, have 76 points from 35 games, one point behind Real
Madrid hosting Alaves on Friday.
Espanyol, one of Spain’s biggest clubs, fell to the second
division for the first time since its rise in 1994, when
the team is bottom of the standings with 24 points from
35 games.
