Liverpool, the English Premier League champion, has
announced his first contract during the current transfer period,
with Greek defender Costas Tsimikas from Olympiacos Piraeus
on a long-term contract.
The 24-year-old left-back played 46 games with Olympiacos in
all competitions last season, winning the 45th Greek League title.
Liverpool did not disclose financial details of the deal but
British media said the Premier League champions paid 11
million pounds ($ 14.38 million) for Tsimikas, who has
three matches for Greece since his debut in 2018.
Tsimikas was quoted by the Liverpool website as saying, “I am
very happy and proud to be here. For me it is the biggest team in
the world. It is my honor to be here and I will do my best to help the team.”
“I like the Premier League a lot and I watch it on TV. It was
always my dream when I was young to play in this league,” he added.
Tsimikas added, “With a lot of work and focus on what I do and
what coach (Jürgen Klopp) wants from me and training daily
seriously, I can develop my performance. I want to achieve our
goals. Win the league again and also the Champions League.”
Liverpool won the most prestigious European club
championship in 2019, but bade farewell to this year’s edition of
the Round of 16 against Atletico Madrid.
Tsimikas, who has two years of loan experience in Esbjerg and
Netherlands’ Willem Tilburg, has experience playing in the
Champions League and is expected to substitute left-back Andy Robertson.
“We have seen Costas for a long time and are really happy to
have him join us. It’s great news before we all return soon,” Klopp said.
He added, “He is a great footballer who always strives to win
and compete and I really like his mentality.”
