According to a report by the “Goal.com” sports website,
the Argentine star Lionel Messi will stay with his current
club Barcelona, competing in the Spanish Football League
for another year.
According to “Reuters”, Messi told the “Goal” website that he
will stay with Barcelona to avoid a legal dispute, adding that
the way the club is managed under Giuseppe Bartomeu is “disastrous”.
Messi’s father had sent a letter to the Spanish League on Friday,
in which he said that his son has the right to leave Barcelona
immediately without having to pay 700 million euros
($ 837 million) of the penalty clause.
The message comes a few days after the league announced that
Messi is still subject to a contract until June 2021 and cannot
leave Barcelona without paying the penalty clause.
In the message, which was seen by the Associated Press, Jorge
Messi, the father of the Argentine star, opposed this and said
that the contract allows his son to leave for free at the end of
the season that was postponed this year due to the emerging
Corona virus pandemic.
Lionel Messi relied on a contract clause to leave Barcelona last
week, shortly after the team’s humiliating 8-2 defeat to Bayern
Munich in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Barcelona claims the clause expired on June 10, and told Messi
that he must stay until the end of his contract or pay the penalty clause.
A message was sent to Jorge Messi, who is also his son’s agent,
two days after no agreement was reached in a meeting between
him and Barcelona club president Josep Bartomeu.
