Recently released video clips showed a dialogue between a
match referee and Argentine star Lionel Messi, in a match that
football fans around the world will not forget.
The dialogue between Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers and Messi
took place during the first-leg match between Barcelona and
Liverpool, specifically after the Argentine star scored the third
goal against the “Reds”, according to what the video showed,
as part of a documentary film that will be published by the
UEFA Champions League Europe.
After Messi scored his third goal, from a “super-free” kick, he
went to celebrate with the fans and slowly returned to his team’s
area, which disrupted Liverpool’s start to the midfield kick.
This angered the veteran Swedish referee, who appeared in the
video shouting: “Why are you doing that, Messi? Let’s show
them some respect (Liverpool).”
He added, addressing the Barcelona captain: “Why do you do
that every time? Let’s go to your area,” and he meant delaying
Messi to return after scoring the goal.
It is noteworthy that Messi led his team that night to a 3-0
victory over Liverpool in the semi-final first leg of 2019
UEFA Champions League.
But the surprise occurred one week later when Liverpool
reversed the score and managed to win 4-0 at Anfield,
leaving Messi and Barcelona in a “humiliating” way out of the
Champions League.
Despite Barcelona’s exit from the tournament, football fans still
remember Messi’s amazing goal in the first leg, which came
from a long-range free-kick, which hit the Brazilian’s net,
Alison Baker.
