Irish mixed martial arts star, Conor McGregor, announced on
Thursday that he is retiring again, for a fight with American
Dustin Poirier in January.
“Conor McGregor has signed the fight agreement (…) and he
will face Dustin Poirier on January 23 in a replay of their
featherweight fight in 2014.”
The statement indicated that the likely destination of the match
would be the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi.
McGregor, who defeated Poirier in the first round by knockout
in 2014, has had no fight since January when he defeated the
latter’s compatriot Donald Cerrone in 40 seconds.
MacGregor announced last June that he would retire for the
third time, but his name remained linked to the possibility of
a new fight with the Filipino boxing legend, Manny Pacquiao.
In late September, the latter announced his desire to contest
a fight with the Irishman in 2021 in the Middle East, where the
latter responded via Twitter: “Next, I will fight with Manny
Pacquiao in the Middle East.”
“It would be a real honor to have faced two of the best boxers of
modern times,” he added, referring to American Floyd Mayweather.
