Atletico Madrid achieved their first victory over Barcelona in
the Spanish Premier League in more than ten years when Yannick Carrasco
took advantage of goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s mistake
to lead the home side to a 1-0 win at Wanda Metropolitano.
The Belgian winger opened the scoring at the end of the first
half, as he took advantage of Ter Stegen’s exit and preceded him
to put the ball between his legs and then shot in the empty goal.
And Atletico deserved to win despite the absence of scorer Luis
Suarez, whose infection with the Coronavirus kept him from
facing his former team.
Marcos Llorente nearly put Atletico ahead early, but his shot hit
the crossbar off the field while Ter Stegen starred to save a chance
from Saul Niguez.
Barcelona captain Lionel Messi gave a game to be forgotten as
he did not give much, while former Atletico striker Antoine
Griezmann missed an opportunity in every half to drop the
Catalans for the third time this season and their score stops at
11 points in tenth place.
Atletico jumped to second place with 20 points, equal with
leaders Real Sociedad.
