Liverpool coach Juergen Klopp said on Tuesday that he impressed by the level that
Tottenham Hotspur is leading under Jose Mourinho in the English Premier League.
Klopp said that Mourinho had proven his ability to face criticism and recovered from the elite coaches,
leading Tottenham to the top of the Premier League.
Tottenham, under Mourinho’s leadership, has the best defensive record, beating defending champions
Liverpool before their top match at Anfield on Wednesday.
Although Tottenham accused of being a counter-attacking defensive team, Klopp said there are
similarities with his side. “Mourinho has shown that he has the ability to recover and what he did at
Tottenham is very impressive,” the German coach told reporters.
“The way he plays is really good and has turned into a machine for positive results,” Reuters quoted Klopp
as saying. “His plan is not based on counter-attacks only, but he has a disciplined team.”
He added, “Harry Kane has retreated to the depth like Roberto Firmino does, as he has two fast wings,
an offensive midfield in the presence of (Tangy) Ndombele, and a strong midfield behind him. This is real
football and the top of the league cannot reach with counterattacks only.”
Klopp is aware of the scoring abundance of Tottenham duo Kane and Son Heung-min, who together scored
19 goals and provided 14 assists in the competition, but stressed the presence of other weapons.
