Arsenal’s coach, Michael Arteta, turned to mathematics and statistics in an attempt to explain
the team’s poor performance in the Premier League.
The London club lost two goals to Everton on Saturday, and is ranked fifteenth in the standings,
and has not won any league matches since the first of November.
“We won the match against Everton last year with a 25 percent chance of winning, and we won
3 goals for two,” Arteta said on Monday.
“At the end of last week, the chance of winning was 67 percent, the highest in the history of the Premier League,
and the loss rate was 9 percent, and we lost. The percentage was 3 percent against Burnley and we lost,
and 7 percent against Tottenham and we lost.”
“There is something other than that. It’s not just about performance on the field. It’s another thing that has
to go our way and at the moment it isn’t.”
Data analysis is playing an increasingly important role in football, but Arteta’s comments may not calm
the nerves of Arsenal fans.
Arteta’s team have scored only 2 points from their last 7 matches, and have scored only 12 goals in 14 league
matches so far this season.
Arsenal will play Manchester City in the League Cup quarter-finals, Tuesday.
