The annoyance appeared on the face of Real Madrid coach, Zinedine Zidane, after his team failed
to resolve the victory and contented themselves with a 1-1 draw with its host Elche, on Wednesday,
two points behind Atletico Madrid (who played two games less) and the leaders of the Spanish First Division.
Luka Modric put Real Madrid ahead with a header in the first half but the team failed to consolidate their lead
and Elche equalized with a penalty kick from Fidel Chavez after the break.
Zidane told reporters, “The feeling is not good because we had the opportunities, and we could not finish
the match .. Once (Elche) scored his goal, he returned to defense and closed the spaces, and things were difficult
for us.”
Defending champions Real Madrid have won their last six matches in all competitions, and Zidane denied talking
about his team feeling “full” (from victories) before facing Elche, who is returning to the top flight for the first time
since 2015.
“I don’t think we suffered from excessive confidence because we know what is at stake. The influencing factor
was scoring the second goal and we failed to do so. The match was more difficult after (Elche) equalized even
though we created several chances after that,” he said.
“We missed two points, but we must go ahead and think about the next match,” he added.
Real return to host the resplendent Celta Vigo, who have won six of their last seven matches and have not
lost since November 21.
