Ronaldo leads Portugal to a big win against Switzerland
Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals to lead Portugal to a 4-0 victory over Switzerland in
the UEFA Nations League in Lisbon.
William Carvalho and Joao Cancelo also scored, and the hosts missed a large number of
opportunities to increase the number of goals, so that the visiting team suffered the largest
loss since the defeat against Germany by the same result in 2008.
Portugal has four points from the first two rounds of Group A, and is ahead of second-placed
Czech Republic on goal difference. Switzerland do not have a point after losing twice, and have not
achieved any victory in the last four matches since securing qualification for the World Cup.
Carvalho opened the scoring when he followed a free kick by Ronaldo, who added a quick double to
raise his score to 117 goals and consolidate his record as the top scorer in international matches.
Ronaldo could have scored the third goal but missed two chances before the break, the first from
incredibly close range, but Cancelo finished the goals for Portugal in the second half.
Portugal plays the Czech Republic next Thursday, while Switzerland plays Spain on the same night.
