Enrique rules out Spain winning the World Cup and nominates two other teams
Spain coach Luis Enrique has ruled out La Roja winning the World Cup in Qatar later this year,
expecting that the tournament will be limited to two teams.
At a press conference before facing the Czech Republic in the European Nations League, on Sunday,
Enrique answered a journalist’s question about his expectations of the candidate to win the 2022 World Cup,
saying: “Argentina comes first and then the Brazilian team, as the two teams are very ahead of the rest of
the teams that will play in the tournament.” As reported by Football Spain.
Speaking about Spain’s lackluster performance in the Nations League, Enrique said: “If some of us expect
to win all the matches we play, they don’t know anything about modern football. Look at France, the 2018
World Cup champion and the 2021 Nations League winner, despite this. She got 2 points from her first
3 matches in the tournament.
On the participation of Barcelona striker Ansu Fati, who has not played with Spain since October 2020,
in the Czech match, Enrique said: “I have no doubts that he will return to his level. He is a unique player
in his relationship with good scoring.”
Enrique also praised the talent of Gavi, who has played in all three of the opening matches of the Nations League,
but said he “has a lot to improve on and off the pitch”.
Spain, the 2010 World Cup champion, hopes to make a strong showing in the next World Cup, after
the disappointing exit of the team from the group stage in the 2014 edition in Brazil, and the second
round of the Russia edition in 2018.
