Germany beat Italy 5-2 after a superb attacking display to secure their first victory in Group C at

the first level of the UEFA Nations League, ending their four-match unbeaten run and continuing

their unbeaten run under coach Hans Flick.

In Germany’s best performance under Flick, Timo Werner scored twice after goals from Joshua Kimmich,

Ilkay Gundogan and Thomas Muller gave Germany the lead. Youngster Wilfried Nyunto reduced the difference

in the 78th minute, and Alessandro Bastoni added the second goal with a header for Italy.

This is Germany’s first victory in the Nations League in four matches, and the first for Flick, who has not lost

in 13 matches since taking charge last year, against a major European team. The team drew with Italy 10 days ago.

Germany, who are looking to reach their top level at the World Cup after being knocked out in the first round

in 2018, have six points in second place, one point behind leaders Hungary.

Flick’s side struggled during last week’s 1-1 draw against Hungary after they drew by the same score against

England and Italy earlier this month.

“The team that put in such a performance in the fourth game of the Nations League should be congratulated,

” Flick said. “We needed to win because the victories are good to gain more confidence and we saw after

the first goal what was possible.”

“We are looking forward to the road to the World Cup. We will play two matches in September to see what

still needs to be fixed or adapted.”

Vilk’s side struggled in a 1-1 draw with Hungary last week after drawing by the same score against England

and Italy earlier this month.
