Liverpool legend: Salah’s negotiations threaten the club
Former Liverpool star Robbie Fowler expressed his belief that the negotiations of the team’s
top scorer, Mohamed Salah, to renew his contract “pose a threat” to the English club, especially
in light of the salary ceiling that Liverpool adheres to and reports indicating the efforts of Real Madrid
to obtain the services of the “Pharaoh”.
Salah’s contract with Liverpool expires in June 2023, and negotiations are still complicated between
the two parties, as he demands a weekly salary of more than 400,000 pounds, while the English club
refuses because of the salary ceiling.
Some reports claim that Salah may be on his way out of Anfield this summer, for 60 million pounds,
heading to Real Madrid.
Fowler, one of the legends of Liverpool, wrote in the British newspaper “Mirror”: “What salary does
a player in the top three in the world receive? It is clear that he thinks it is more than what Liverpool offers.”
Salah earns 200,000 pounds per week currently, and comes in a middle and late position in terms
of wages among the stars of the English Premier League.
“I think when he said that no matter what happens with his contract he will be at Anfield next year,
it was clearly a threat.”
The former Liverpool star explained his opinion by saying: “His calculations are that if he leaves Liverpool
for free next summer, he will get the wages he wants. This can work.”
“But there is another calculation. Will he be the same player next summer? (ie, at the same level). He has
been one of the best players in the world for a long time, but since the beginning of this year he has been
very average.”
Salah had started the last season in a special way, scoring 22 goals and sending 10 assists before Christmas,
but with the intensification of talk about his contract, he was not close to the same production during the
second half of the season.
Fowler continued his speech by asking, “If the club’s officials are really asking: Will the Egyptian player
be able to continue to provide world-class performance in the coming years?”
