Leicester goalkeeper Schmeichel moves to Nice France
The Danish player, Kasper Schmeichel, goalkeeper of the English club
Leicester City, has moved to the French team Nice, after the two clubs
announced yesterday, Wednesday.
The French club did not reveal the contract period or the value of the deal
to include the 35-year-old goalkeeper, while British reports stated that
Schmeichel joined a three-year contract after Nice agreed to pay 1.21 million dollars.
“Nice is delighted to sign the goalkeeper, who has reached the semi-finals
of Euro 2020,” the French club said in a statement, according to Reuters.
Schmeichel, who joined Leicester City in 2011 from Leeds United, helped
Leicester to a surprise Premier League title in the 2015-2016 season,
as well as the FA Cup in 2021.
Schmeichel made 479 appearances for Leicester over the course of 11 seasons,
and is the third most capped player in the club’s history.
The Danish goalkeeper participated in his first international match during
Denmark’s 3-0 victory over Macedonia in 2013, and played more than
80 international matches.
“After 11 amazing seasons I made the difficult decision to leave Leicester,
” Schmeichel said on Twitter. “It was more than just a club for me, it was
the place where I made lifelong friends and memories. It was my home.”
The Danish goalkeeper published some of his favorite memories with the club,
as he published pictures of him celebrating promotion to the Premier League
in 2014, as well as winning the league title two years later, as well as other memories.
The former Leicester captain added: “Eleven seasons… have been so special
thanks to the people behind the scenes, who were on the pitch by my side
and the fans. Your support has been incredible and I’m so grateful
to every one of you.”
The Danish goalkeeper became the third player to join Nice this week after
signing Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey on a free transfer on Monday,
and defender Mattia Vetti from Italy’s Empoli on Wednesday.
