Lewandowski for Benzema: You will win the Ballon d’Or in one condition
Polish international striker Robert Lewandowski joked Thursday that his
French counterpart Karim Benzema will win the Ballon d’Or for the best
player in the world this year, if it is not canceled again.
The current Barcelona striker was the favorite to win the prestigious individual
award given to the best player in the world in 2020 when he was defending
the colors of Bayern Munich, but the ceremony canceled for the first time
since the award established in 1956 due to the Corona virus pandemic.
Lewandowski won a consolation award as he named “Striker of the Year”
at the 2021 ceremony, while Argentine legend Lionel Messi, striker of Paris Saint-Germain,
won the Ballon d’Or for the seventh time in his career.
“(Benzema) may be one of the favorites to win the Ballon d’Or,” Lewandowski told
Movistar Thursday.
He added, “If they do not cancel (the award), it is possible that he will win this Ballon d’Or.”
Indeed, the striker of the “Duke” national team and Real Madrid is ahead of all
his competitors in the race to win the award presented by “France Football”
magazine at next Monday’s ceremony in the French capital, Paris, after he contributed
to Real Madrid’s victory in the Champions League and the Spanish League last season,
and crowned top scorer in both competitions. .
Bayern Munich won the domestic league and Champions League titles in
the 2019-2020 season, thanks to the brilliance of Lewandowski, who scored
15 goals in the ancient continental competition, on his way to winning the final
match over Saint-Germain 1-0.
“I wanted to tell Robert Lewandowski that it was a great honor to face him,
” Messi said during the 2021 ceremony, adding: “He deserved to win it last year.”
