Jose Luis Gaia scored a goal in stoppage time to give Spain a
1-1 draw with host Germany at the start of their European
Nations League campaign in their first international match in
nearly ten months due to the Corona pandemic.
Timo Werner put Germany ahead six minutes into the second
half with a low shot between two defenders who deceived
goalkeeper David De Gea in the empty stadium of Stuttgart.
It seemed that Spain would fail to score for the first time after
40 consecutive matches before Gaia snatched a draw in the last
attack of the match.
The German national team, in its new form, missed almost all
international Bayern Munich and Leipzig players after their
participation in the Champions League and committed many
defensive mistakes to give Spain the only two chances in
the first half through Rodrigo.
The visiting team, which was playing its first match under coach
Luis Enrique since his return to the position last November,
put in a squad that saw a lot of changes and a slump in
performance after the break.
Ukraine top Group D in First Division with three points after
beating Switzerland 2-1, while Germany and Spain have one point.
