Raheem Sterling scored a goal in the 90th minute from the
penalty spot, to give England a 1-0 victory over Iceland in the
UEFA Europa League in Reykjavik on Saturday after the hosts
squandered an opportunity to tie a penalty in stoppage time.
Sterling scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot after
a disappointing match, when the referee ruled that Sverir
Ingason had touched the ball with his hand after a shot from
the England striker.
Ingason sent off for handball, with the two teams playing
with ten men after England full-back, Kyle Walker sent off
in the 70th minute.
Iceland, who had defeated England in the 2016 European
Championships had a chance to draw in their opening match in
Group Two in the Division One League when Joe Gomez
fouled Albert Gudmundsson in the area, but Birker Pierson
struck over the crossbar from the penalty spot to win coach
Gareth Southgate’s side the three points.
