Mahrez and the “30-minute nightmare” .. A sad night in Manchester City shirt
A “dark night” suffered by Algerian Riyad Mahrez in Copenhagen,
on Tuesday evening, which a number of Manchester City fans considered
his worst in the team’s shirt.
Mahrez did not know that the match between Manchester City and Copenhagen
in the Champions League would be such a bad night for him, but this was achieved,
only half an hour after the start of the match.
The start of the “frustrating” night was when Manchester City scored a goal
through Spaniard Rodrigo, in the 11th minute, before it was canceled by video
technology, due to a handball by Riyad Mahrez, moments before the goal.
Then Manchester City got a penalty kick in the 25th minute, Mahrez directed
himself to pay it, to compensate for the canceled goal, so he missed it by hitting
the corner of goalkeeper Camil Grabara, who pushed him away with his hand,
amid the “explosion” of the Copenhagen fans in the stands
The “knockout” came in the 32nd minute, when Spanish coach Pep Guardiola
decided to take Mahrez out of the match early, and enter defender Robin Diaz,
to compensate for the expulsion of defender Sergio Gomez moments before.
Manchester City fans criticized Mahrez on social media, while some said that
Mahrez is a great player and his current level is a “temporary condition”.
Some criticized Mahrez’s insistence on taking penalty kicks, especially that he
missed 9 out of 31 kicks during his career, which means that his missed penalty
kicks amounted to 30%.
Mahrez lost his main place in Pep Guardiola’s squad this season, participating
in 3 league matches out of 9, and scored one goal in the Premier League so far.
