The English championships, Wimbledon, the third major
tennis grand slam, which was due to start in late June,
canceled due to a new Corona virus outbreak,
organizers announced on Wednesday.
The All England Club announced in a statement after an
emergency meeting, that it had decided with the
tournament management committee, which described
as the most ancient in the world, and held on grass
pitches: “To cancel the 2020 version due to public health
concerns associated with the emerging epidemic of
Corona virus.
The statement said the 134th edition of the tournament
will held between June 28 and July 11, 2021.
The Wimbledon Championship is the first Grand Slam to
cancel this season, after playing the Australian
Championship in January, the Roland Garros tournament
postponed, and the American Open remained on
schedule (until now).
The US Open scheduled to start on August 24, and the
organizing committee has not yet decided to postpone
the tournament, despite the outbreak of the virus at the
tournament’s residence in New York.
The French championship, Roland Garros, was
postponed from May to September 20, which caused
controversy among tennis organizers, due to the
proximity of its date with the American Open.
