The Italian newspaper “La Repubblica” published a
report that highlighted the options available to resolve
the ranking of clubs participating in the Italian league,
following the announcement by Italian Prime Minister
Giuseppe Conte on Monday evening to suspend sporting
events, including the “Calcio” matches to combat the
new Corona outbreak.
According to the Italian newspaper, the first and most
likely option is to postpone the “Euro 2020”, and thus the
Italian league will complete in the summer, and the
European Nations Championship will transfer to
held in the fall or at the end of the year.
The second scenario, according to what report by
the “Eurosport” website, is that the schedule pressed
and the last month played intensively, so that each
club plays once in two or three days, in addition to
postponing the Italian Cup to June or August.
Finally comes the third scenario, which is the worst,
where stopping is the end of the season, and the title is
not awarded to any team, the European championships
qualify the clubs that currently occupy the positions that
qualify for them, i.e. Juventus, Lazio, Inter and Atlanta
for the Champions League, while Rome and Naples
qualify for the European League.
On the issue of relegation, all clubs will be safe, and two
Serie B teams will add to the Serie A clubs,
bringing the total to 22.
The Italian Prime Minister had said at a press
conference: “There are no reasons for the continuation of
matches and sporting events, and I mean the Football
League. I am sorry, but all fans of the game (Tefuzi)
must take note of this” without explaining the fate of the
matches that the clubs will play. Italy in the Champions
League and European League (Europa League) in the
coming weeks, not to other sports.
The decision comes after the Italian government took
extraordinary measures, on Sunday, to impose a
quarantine on millions of Italians in the north of the
country, in addition to restrictive measures in various
parts of the country that will take effect until the third of
next April as well.
According to these measures, the sporting competitions
held behind closed doors, but since Sunday, several
voices have appeared calling for the suspension of the
sporting competitions, especially the Italian league
“Seri A”.
Italy, the country most affected by the virus in Europe,
recorded 97 deaths in 24 hours, raising its death toll
since the start of the epidemic on its soil to 463,
according to an official tally of the Italian authorities.
