Former Liverpool defender Jimmy Carragher said that the
absence of defender Virgil van Dyck from England
champions after suffering a knee ligament injury opened the
door to the battle for the Premier League title in football wide
and demanded his former team to sign a new defender as a
replacement for the injured Dutch player.
Van Dyck will undergo surgery to repair the injury he suffered
during his team’s 2-2 draw with neighbors Everton last Saturday.
“The big question that arises right now is whether Liverpool can
win the Premier League title without Van Dyck. I think the
player’s absence opens the door to the title battle wide open,”
Carragher told Sky Sports.
He continued: “With the beginning of the current season, I felt
that Liverpool was still the strongest team, but with the absence
of Van Dyck, which may extend to the end of the season, the
task of Liverpool will become more difficult.”
“Liverpool should enter the transfer market in January and the
reason is not just Van Dyck’s injury. The team is weak in this
area anyway, after losing Diane Lovren at the start of the
season. Other players in these positions are vulnerable to
injury,” Carragher added.
