A few days after he recovered from a prolonged coma,
Ajax Amsterdam announced the cancellation of his
contract with Moroccan player Abdelhak Nuri, who
suffered brain damage after a heart attack during a
friendly match in mid-2017.
Reuters quoted Dutch media on Tuesday that Ajax
continued to pay Nuri’s salary, but he officially canceled
the contract, which was to be renewed in July.
The Dutch newspaper “De Telegraaf” reported that the
club is in talks with the Nuri family, about a future
solution to the Dutch player’s problem, which he woke
up last week from a coma that lasted nearly 3 years.
A long dispute arose between Ajax and the Nuri family,
in the search for a settlement of the issue, especially
after the club admitted to providing “inadequate” medical
care in the field for the player who suddenly collapsed
during a friendly match against Werder Bremen in July
2017 in Austria.
Despite his attempts to rescue him on the field, and then
transferred him to the hospital, Nuri suffered a serious
brain damage as a result of a heart attack during the
match.
In 2018, van der Sar, general manager of Ajax, said: “We
are aware of our responsibility for the consequences.”
Nuri, born in Amsterdam to parents from Morocco, made
15 appearances for Ajax in his first appearance in the
2016-2017 season and is still a teenager, and is now 22
years old.
