The club, burdened by absenteeism in its ranks, suffered a new
setback, injuring center-back Joe Gomez in the knee during the
“Three Lions” camp.
The England champion suffered a heavy blow last month by
injuring his Dutch international center-back Van Dyck, with a
cut in the cruciate ligament, as a result of which he underwent
an operation that is expected to keep him out of competition
until the end of the season.
The right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold will also be absent from
the team for a whole month after suffering a calf injury during
the match against Manchester City (1-1) Sunday in the League,
while the Brazilian center-back Fabinho, who occupied the
center of defense after a Van Dyck injury, He is recovering
from a hamstring injury he suffered in the match against
Midtland in the European Champions League late last month.
England coach Gareth Southgate said, “I cannot say how severe
the injury is because he has not yet been tested. What was
disturbing was that he was in severe pain and no one was around
when he was injured.”
“I did not like this. We all wish him well and that the injury will
not be what we imagine,” he added.
Gomez, 23, was called up to the England squad that will meet
Ireland in a friendly Thursday, before their matches against
Belgium and Iceland in the last two rounds of the European
Nations League.
