The Italian Consumer Association announced, on Monday, that it has filed a lawsuit against
the American company, “Apple”, for intentionally slowing down old iPhones in Italy.
Friday, in a lawsuit filed with the Milan court, demanded damages amounting to 60 million euros,
for its practice of slowing down one million devices of the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, and 6s Plus models,
which were sold between 2014 and 2020.
According to the technology news site “Gizmo”, the compensation of 60 euros per user represents
the average amount that consumers pay to replace the batteries of their devices, which have become
slow and depleted very quickly, due to the software updates imposed by the American company.
Although Apple insists that it has not done anything to intentionally shorten the life of any of its products,
or weaken the user experience to push customers’ upgrades, it has previously acknowledged that processor
speeds will be negatively affected in the event that the battery situation deteriorates.
And “Apple” faced a lot of lawsuits in Europe recently, as Belgium and Spain submitted a similar request
last month, due to what it described as “deliberate slowing down” of old iPhones.
The European Consumer Association, which coordinates the lawsuits, said it was also planning to launch
a fourth class-action lawsuit in Portugal in the coming weeks against Apple, according to the IT News website,
which specializes in technology news.
Last March, Apple agreed to a $ 500 million settlement in the United States, after admitting to slowing down
older iPhones.
The company also agreed to a second settlement in November with 34 US states for an additional $ 113 million.
