Joao Felix and Luis Suarez collaborated to lead Atletico Madrid to compensate for their delay and win
at home to Valencia, 3-1, on Sunday, and to continue their path relentlessly towards the Spanish League title.
Valencia took the lead in the 11th minute with an unbending long shot from Serbian midfielder Uruch Racic,
but the league leaders responded in the 23rd minute when Felix scored from a corner kick.
The Portuguese striker then received a pass between the defenders to launch a quick counterattack at the start
of the second half and passed to Suarez, who touched the ball twice before shooting into the far corner from
a difficult angle.
The Uruguayan striker, who was celebrating his 34th birthday, was tied with Youssef Al-Nusiri at the top of
the list of scorer in the Spanish League, and each has 12 goals in 15 matches since Barcelona gave up on him
last year.
Suarez also scored two goals, including a penalty kick in the last minute, which he obtained himself, to win
Atletico 2-1 to host Eibar, last Thursday.
Substitute Angel Correa finished off a superb move by Marcos Llorente in the 72nd minute, as Diego Simeone’s
side claimed their seventh successive victory in the league.
Atletico tops the standings with 47 points from 18 games and is 7 points ahead of Real Madrid’s closest chasers,
with an additional match remaining, while Valencia ranks 14th and has 20 points.
“Playing with a striker like Luis Suarez is perfect. He continues to score goals and he is very important to
the team,” said Felix.
“We might be late early, but we are a team that continues to fight until the end. We are doing well and focus
on every match and this is what we need to keep doing. We don’t look at the number of points we have,” he added.
