The former English star, David Beckham, revealed the
moment he discovered he had to completely retire from
football.
The former England captain said that his confrontation
with Argentine Lionel Messi, in the Champions League,
in 2013, was the moment that prompted him to leave
football.
Beckham and his team faced Paris Saint-Germain, rivals
Messi and Barcelona, in the Champions League quarter-
finals for the 2012-2013 season.
Beckham suffered a lot in the “containment” of
Argentine star Messi in the middle of the stadium,
in the confrontation that ended with a score of 2-2 in
the first leg, and a 1-1 in the second leg, to qualify
Barcelona for the semi-finals.
“I decided to retire while Messi was running around me
and overtaking me,” Beckham said.
Beckham was then 37 years old, facing Messi, who was
just 25.
Beckham added: “Despite my advanced age at the time,
I enjoyed the confrontation, we were excellent and we
were not defeated before them.”
Indeed, Beckham left football forever after 2013
season, and his last Champions League match was
against Barcelona and Messi.
It is noteworthy that Beckham had a very short
experience with Paris Saint-Germain in 2013,
coming from the American Los Angeles Galaxy,
to drop the curtain after that on a busy career in football,
during which he played more than 840 games.
