Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has expressed concern about
the return of domestic league competitions soon, in light of
the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic.
Pique called in TV statements, quoted by the Spanish sports
newspaper “AS”, to “take a little leeway” about returning to
the stadiums, stressing at the same time that he understood
the necessity of resuming the League matches to avoid negative
financial effects in the event of the end of the current season
before its completion.
He continued: “Playing behind closed doors is not the way it is,
but ending the season without playing again will not be good
either, even if Barcelona is at the top.”
And he added: “For a long time we did not play games, so I tell
the officials in the Spanish League that giving us more training
days will not be a bad thing, to avoid injuries.”
After returning to training with Barcelona on Friday, Pique said:
“So far it is good despite the feeling of strange, but we have to
adapt. It is important that everyone be aware of the existing
protocols and closely monitors them.”
Some Spanish clubs have begun training on the field amidst
strict protocols and precautions, adhering to the principle of
social spacing and wearing gloves and masks.
Earlier, the president of the Spanish League clubs, Javier Tepas,
expressed his hope for the return of the league on the twelfth of
next June, stressing the need to adapt to the new situations and
work on their basis in the coming period.
“We have to adapt to the new circumstances,” Tepas said in
a television interview. “The matches themselves will be played,
but without an audience.”
When the competition stopped, Barcelona was ranked first in
the La Liga table with 58 points after 27 rounds, two points
behind second-placed Real Madrid.
