Former FIFA president Joseph Blatter has said that the
United States can still host the 2022 World Cup, amid
allegations of corruption against Qatar.
Qatar will host the World Cup in December 2022, which
is the first time that world championships will not take
place during the June-July period.
Blatter said that “Germany can host the World Cup, but
the chances of that happening are slim, given that Europe
hosted the last version of the World Cup.”
The United States, along with Mexico and Canada, are
due to host the World Cup in 2026, but Blatter suggested
offering the date.
“America can do that instead of 2026 … They are
capable,” he said. “It doesn’t need rocket science! Japan
can do that too.”
The Financial Public Prosecution in France had opened
an investigation into “private corruption”, “criminal
conspiracy” and “the exploitation of influence and
concealing the exploitation of influence” about granting
Qatar the right to host the World Cup 2022.
And there are still suspicions regarding granting Qatar
the right to host the 2022 World Cup, which led some to
call the International Football Association (FIFA) to
cancel this football.
The decision taken in December 2010 to grant Qatar the
right to host the World Cup surprised many because of
the lack of a large fan base, in addition to the high
temperatures in the summer.
And last March, leaked documents obtained by the
British newspaper “Sunday Times” revealed that Qatar
paid “millions” bribes, millions of dollars, to the FIFA,
in order to obtain the World Cup hosting.
The newspaper stated in an exclusive investigation
published according to the documents, that Doha paid a
total of 880 million US dollars to FIFA, in its endeavor
to host the next year’s Cup.
