Chelsea announce the signing of Raheem Sterling
Chelsea announced on Wednesday the signing of international striker Raheem Sterling
from his compatriot Manchester City.
And Sterling became the first deal concluded by Chelsea club since it was acquired by
an American consortium led by American Todd Pohley, ending a seven-year era
in Manchester City.
“England star Raheem Sterling has joined Chelsea from Manchester City on a five-year contract,
” the Blues said in a statement on their website.
According to Sky, the player, who has played 77 international matches, will move for
47.5 million pounds (about 56 million dollars), while the BBC spoke of a deal worth
50 million pounds (about 59 million dollars).
Sterling, 27, made 47 appearances for City last season, scoring 17 goals and making
nine assists in all competitions.
The England striker moved to Man City from Liverpool in July 2015, and scored
131 goals in 337 with the Blues.
He won the League title with City on four occasions, in addition to the League Cup
title four times as well, and the FA Cup once.
But he was left out of coach Pep Guardiola’s calculations for long periods of last season,
as the Spanish coach preferred to rely on Phil Foden and Jack Grealish.
Sterling missed the starting lineup against Real Madrid in the Champions League
semi-finals last season, and participated in the starting lineup in six of the last
11 league matches.
The international striker played 77 games for England, and will be an addition
to Chelsea, who struggled to score goals last season and after Romelu Lukaku left
for Inter Milan on loan.
And coach Thomas Tuchel’s team finished last season in third place, and he will
visit Everton at the opening of the new season on the sixth of August.
