Former Iran striker Ali Daei commented on Tuesday that
Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo is close to smashing his
international goalscoring record.
And Ronaldo came close to reaching the Dai number of 109
goals, noting that the Portuguese star scored 102 goals in 168
international matches since his first participation with his
national team in 2003.
“I will congratulate him immediately. Ronaldo has scored 102
goals for Portugal so far and he will definitely break my number,
but he still has to score seven goals,” Daei was quoted by the
Tasnim news agency.
He added, “It is an honor for me to have a player smash my
record. Ronaldo is one of the greatest players not only of this
era but of all. He is a real phenomenon,” according to “Reuters”.
Daei, who held the captaincy of the Iranian national team and
retired in 2006, scored this record tally in 148 international matches.
Ronaldo will have a chance to narrow that gap when Portugal
meets Croatia in their final group match in the European Nations
League on Tuesday.
