De bruyne beating Salah
Belgian international Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City playmaker, won the award for
the best player of the season in the English Premier League on Saturday, beating Egyptian
Mohamed Salah, while his teammate Phil Foden was named the best young player.
De Bruyne has scored 15 league goals this season (a personal record) as well as seven assists
to claim this award for the second time after the 2019-20 season.
The midfielder surpassed his Portuguese teammate Joao Cancelo, Liverpool duo Salah and
Trent Alexander-Arnold, West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen, Arsenal’s young striker Bukayo Saka,
Tottenham Hotspur’s South Korean Song Hyun-min and Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse.
“Winning this award for the second time is an achievement of which I am very proud,” said De Bruyne.
“There is high quality in the Premier League and it is an honor for me to be named with so many
great players who have had great seasons with their clubs.”
Although Salah is the top scorer (22) and decisive passer (13), this did not help him to win the award
for the second time after the 2017-2018 season.
De Bruyne became the fourth player to win the award twice after Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo
(2007 and 2008), Serbian Nemanja Vidic (2009 and 2011) with Manchester United and French
Thierry Henry (2004 and 2006) with Arsenal since its founding in the 1994-1995 season.
On the other hand, Foden played a key role in City’s eagerness to preserve its league title, as it leads
by a point over Liverpool before the final stage on Sunday.
The 21-year-old, who has 9 goals and 5 assists in the league, told the Blue Club website,
“I am proud to win the award for the second season in a row. There are many talented players in
the Premier League this season and I am honored to be crowned again.”
“I’ve been really happy with my performance this season, it’s great to contribute to this team and
I hope it will be a successful new season.”
In a prize that the fans voted for, Foden was ahead of Alexander-Arnold, Chelsea midfielder
Mason Mount, West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, Arsenal duo Aaron Ramsdale and Saka and
Crystal Palace duo Conor Gallagher and Tyrick Mitchell.
