Former Uruguay striker Diego Forlan’s first training experience
was unsuccessful, as he sacked from coaching the local
Penarol team he supervised last December.
According to press reports, the president of Penarol met Forlan
and informed him of the decision of his board of directors to
abandon his services, following the team’s loss to Montevideo
Wanderers, leaders 0-2, to become Pinarol seventh, seven points
behind the lead.
Forlan, the former Manchester United and Atletico Madrid
striker, said on his Twitter account, “I have to leave Penarol,”
thanking his former team for the “opportunity” that he gave him,
adding: “It was a pride for me.”
Forlan, who scored 36 goals in 112 international matches for his
country, said: “I have no regrets. It’s football.”
Forlan choose the best player in the World Cup in South
Africa in 2010, when he led his country to the semi-finals, and
crown the golden boot for the best scorer in the European
championships in 2005 and 2009.
