Goal difference helps Cardiff win in England
Ryan Wintel scored his first goal for Cardiff City when his free kick from
the underside of the crossbar against Wigan went into the net in the second
tier of football, but he will thank his luck as the crossbar was two inches above
the legal height of 8 feet.
One crossbar was higher than the other at Wigan, and the height difference
brought to the referee’s attention before the match.
British media reported that club officials and match officials decided to move forward,
with no team getting an extra advantage, with the two goals switched at the end of
the first half, but Wintel’s last-minute shot secured Cardiff a 3-1 victory on Saturday.
“One of the crossbars was two inches high, and the opponent’s third goal (on its way
) was over the crossbar, so you have to do the math,” Wigan coach Lim Richardson said.
“That sums up the day for us, doesn’t it? It doesn’t help you to prepare for the match,
but it’s the same for both teams. It’s just a coincidence that the killer third-goal shot
might bounced away,” he added, according to Reuters.
Cardiff scored two goals in a different goal than the legal height.
Cardiff’s interim coach Mark Hudson said he had been told before the match
that the problem would take a few hours to fix, which no one wants with fans
already in the stands.
“I asked if we could attack this goal in the two halves, but it was not allowed,”
he added with a laugh.
Reuters was not immediately able to obtain a comment from the English Premier League.
