Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets has expressed his “deep annoyance”, after hearing news of
a salary cut for the Spanish team’s players through the media.
And Spanish press reports said that Barcelona is about to make huge changes in the wage structure
, as the Catalan club must cut expenses amid a severe financial crisis it is going through.
Ahead of Spain’s match against Switzerland in the UEFA Nations League, Busquets said the club had not
told him of their salary cut plans, indicating his dismay at the reports.
The veteran midfielder, who will turn 34 next July, urged club president Juan Laporta to “personally
explain the situation to the players.”
He added in a press conference: “I have heard that many things have been said, and when I come back
from vacation I do not know what they will tell me. I would like them to tell me,” explaining that
“he is always ready to help.”
When asked if management informed the players of the plan, Busquets, who has not played professional
football outside Barcelona, said: “No. They didn’t suggest anything to us and didn’t tell us anything beyond
what you hear.”
He continued, “I think it is not the best decision to announce this through the press, it is always better to
do it directly and face to face.”
Busquets added: “I am always ready to help and find the best situation for everything, not just financially
but for any kind of problem, which is why I prefer to meet with the president of the club to discuss things
and not find out from the media.”
According to Spanish newspapers, defender Sergi Roberto was recently forced to reduce his salary by
60 percent to renew his contract in Barcelona for one season, and he will receive 5 million euros annually.
Busquets is entering the final year of his contract at Camp Nou, and he may be offered a contract renewal
at a reduced salary if recent reports in the Spanish press prove true.
But Goal recently reported that Barcelona will not allow him to leave, because he is still a key player in
coach Xavi Hernandez’s plans.
Busquets made 50 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona last season, which helped them finish
second in La Liga.
