Diogo Jota scored the winning goal near the end, to beat
Liverpool 2-1 at home and West Ham United at Anfield on
Saturday, and to top the Premier League.
Defending champions Liverpool have 16 points from 7 games,
and are three points ahead of Everton, who are visiting Newcastle
United on Sunday.
And West Ham took the lead in the tenth minute through Pablo
Fornals, as the Spanish midfielder put the ball into the net after
a bad header from Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.
Liverpool held the ball for long periods of time but faced
difficulties breaking through coach David Moyes’ organized
defense, and the homeowner missed his usual rhythm and decisiveness
in front of the goal.
Liverpool equalized the result just before the end of the first half
when Mohamed Salah was handicapped inside the penalty area,
after a reckless intervention by Artur Masako, and the Egyptian
striker advanced to successfully implement the penalty kick.
Guetta believed that he put Liverpool ahead when he fired in the
empty goal, after goalkeeper Okash Fabiansky responded to
Sadio Mane’s attempt, but the goal was canceled after the referee,
after watching the game on the screen outside the stadium, saw
a foul against the Senegalese striker.
But Jota managed to score the winning goal 5 minutes before
the end, after receiving a smart pass between the defenders of
substitute Xherdan Shaqiri, and the Portuguese striker did not
miss the goal, scoring his third goal in 3 matches at “Anfield”
with Liverpool.
With this victory, Liverpool equaled the club’s record of keeping
its record unbeaten, in 63 consecutive home games in the league.
