Liverpool set a club record by playing 64 games at home in the Premier League
without a defeat after their 3-0 win over Leicester City at Anfield.
A reverse goal by Johnny Evans and two headers by Diogo Jota
and Roberto Firmino gave Juergen Klopp’s side the victory over
his predecessor Brendan Rodgers.
With this result, defending champions Liverpool are tied with 20 points
with leaders Tottenham Hotspur, while Leicester ranks fourth
and has 18 points, equal to third-placed Chelsea.
Liverpool opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Evans,
under pressure from Sadio Mane, headed the ball into his team’s
goal after James Milner’s corner kick.
Leicester hit back with a clever counterattack as Jimmy Vardy
crossed over to Harvey Barnes who was in a good position but
the left winger’s shot went wide.
Liverpool’s second goal was impressive as Andy Robertson sent
a beautiful cross from the left, which Gota met at the near post
with a header in the far corner.
And Leicester goalkeeper Casper Schmeichel saved a series of
chances to deny the hosts the score in the second half, while
Firmino hit the post twice and Leicester’s defense removed
another attempt for the Brazilian striker from the goal line.
Firmino, who had scored only two goals in his last 23 Premier
League matches, was rewarded for his efforts four minutes
before the end with a fine header from another corner kick by Milner.
