Liverpool director of public health Matthew Ashton said
that the return leg of the sixteen Champions League
match against Atletico Madrid with a full public
attendance, may be the main reason behind the spread of
Corona virus infection in the city.
Matthew Ashton said, in statements to the British
newspaper “The Guardian”, that the establishment of
this match was not the right decision, but he stressed that
it was not a deliberate mistake and perhaps there was no
time when aware of the seriousness of the situation.
More than three thousand fans came from Madrid to
support Atletico at Anfield stadium, which the public
health official saw as a “big mistake.”
According to British government data, as of March 20,
there had been only 20 cases of Covid-19 disease in
London, which had doubled to more than 300 after less
than two weeks.
The match was supposed to take place like its
predecessors without the fans attending, but all parties
eventually decided to hold the match normally.
Atletico Madrid received their pass card for the
Champions League quarter-finals, although the
competition was eventually suspended indefinitely, due
to the deadly virus outbreak in Europe.
