Liverpool, who drew 0-0 with Newcastle United in the last round, did not hit a ball on target in the first 45
minutes but dominated the second half.
But the agglomerated Southampton defense kept the lead, to clinch the homeowner 3 valuable points.
Southampton advanced to sixth place with 29 points and goal difference behind Tottenham and Manchester City,
while Liverpool continued on top with 33 points and goal difference from Manchester United, who has one game postponed.
