Manchester United, the Premier League club, announced on Monday that its former goalkeeper Harry Gregg, the champion of the Munich air disaster, has passed away at the age of 87.
Manchester United wrote on his Twitter account: “With great sadness, we announce the death of former goalkeeper Harry Gregg. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Harry, his friends, and all his fans.”
The Greg Foundation said that the former guard died in a hospital in Northern Ireland.
“Harry died in a hospital in his family. The Greg family thanks very much to Causeway Hospital doctors for the great care Harry has enjoyed in recent weeks,” she added.
Greg, a former international guard from Northern Ireland, helped save many of his colleagues and other passengers who crashed in Munich on February 6, 1958, and the accident killed 23 people, including eight of his fellow players.
Greg played 25 games with Northern Ireland between 1954 and 1963, participated in the 1958 World Cup, and was chosen as the best goalkeeper in the tournament.
