The English club Tottenham suffered a new blow on
Monday, adding the name of the Dutch international,
Stephen Bergwen, to the injured list, after he had a
sprain on his left ankle, which could keep him out of the
field until the end of the season, according to the
Portuguese team coach, Jose Mourinho.
The Bergwen injury is a blow for Mourinho, who aspires
to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions
League, at the expense of Leipzig, Germany, where he
will visit him, on Tuesday, in the second leg of the final
price, knowing that the German team won back 1-0 in
the home of the English team.
“I don’t expect Stephen to play again this season,” said
the Portuguese coach on the eve of the match.
“We are in a very bad situation, but Tuesday there is a
match. We will give it all we have to either win or leave
everything we have on the field.”
“Obviously, I would have liked to have been ahead, but I
think Leipzig is feeling the pressure with this result,”
Mourinho said.
Bergen was injured, on Saturday, during the match in
which his team tied 1-0 to host Burnley in the domestic
league.
The Dutch striker was added to the list of top scorer
Harry Kane, South Korean Sun Hyung-min and French
Musa Sissoko, which added to the difficulties of the
“Special One” team, which is going through one of its
worst stages after suffering four losses and drew in the
last 5 games in all competitions.
And Tottenham announced earlier, Monday, in a
statement that “after evaluation and examination by the
medical device, we can confirm that Stephen Bergen
suffered a major twisting in his left ankle during our
match against Burnley.”
“The Dutch international will now undergo a prolonged
period of rehabilitation, as his progress will continue to
be evaluated,” the statement added.
The Dutchman has scored two goals in 7 games since
joining Tottenham from Eindhoven in January, kicking
off their debut when Spurs won 2-0 at home to
Manchester City.
On the other hand, Caen began training, Monday, but the
England captain is still weeks away from returning to
action where he is still recovering from back muscle
surgery.
Sun will be out for most of the rest of the season due to a
fracture to his right arm.
Spurs are eighth in the English Premier League, with 41
points, and away from Chelsea, the last officially
qualified for the Champions League next season, by 7
points.
