Dutch football legend Marco van Basten has made
controversial statements about the “eternal comparison”
between the two stars, Lionel Messi and Cristiano
Ronaldo.
Football fans have always disagreed over the best star
between the two rivals, Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus) and
Lionel Messi (Barcelona), but Van Basten had a firm
opinion on the matter.
“Cristiano is a great player, but whoever says he is better
than Messi does not know anything about football, or he
says it because of his personal hatred for Messi,” the
former Dutch scorer said in comments to the Italian
newspaper “Corriere Dello Sport”.
He added: “Messi is a unique player. It is impossible to
imitate him, and it is impossible to repeat his talent. A
player like him comes every 50 or 100 years.”
Van Basten’s career in the stadium ended tragically in
1995 when he decided to retire at the age of only 28, due
to his long-suffering with injuries.
“Flying Dutchman” expressed his admiration for the
continuity of Messi and Ronaldo: “I stopped playing at
the age of 28 years … Look at Ronaldo and Messi, both
of whom are over 30 and still at the top.”
It is reported that Messi won 6 gold balls for the best
player in the world, while his Portuguese rivals achieved
5 times.
