“One solution” to save Spanish football after Corona

“One solution” to save Spanish football after Corona

Spanish Football Association President Javier Tepas has said

that Spanish clubs will have no choice but to cut players

’salaries next season, due to the financial implications of

the Corona pandemic.

The season has been suspended in Spain since March, and

despite expectations for the resumption of matches in June

without fans, the “La Liga” still expects the clubs together

to incur losses of 300 million euros (326.07 million dollars)

due to declining revenues due to the epidemic.

To face these huge losses, several clubs, including Barcelona

and Atletico Madrid, have temporarily reduced the salaries of

players and employees, but Tepas believes that further measures

must be taken.

“The clubs will have to cut the salaries of their players. There is

no other solution,” Tepas was quoted by the Spanish newspaper

“S” as saying.

Spanish clubs spent record amounts last year on the transfer

market, including Barcelona obtaining the services of Antoine

Griezmann for 120 million euros from Atletico Madrid, who in

turn spent 126 million euros to sign the Portuguese Joao Felix.

But Tibas said that the clubs will have to reduce their activity in

the transfer market this year according to strict rules laid down

by league officials that determine what the club can spend

according to its expected revenues.

“Clubs have a difference that exceeds the maximum allowable

salary for next season, and they will have to use more in the

youth and academia sector because the authorities will not

allow any transfers that exceed this limit,” he added.

He continued: “I do not think that there will be a lot of transfer

deals next season in Spain or anywhere else. The current

situation will not allow this. Teams will have to reduce player

salaries or reduce transfer deals or contract with less expensive

players.”
