Idenio, son of Brazilian football legend Pele, said his father was suffering from a “depression” and was barely leaving the house due to health problems that left him unable to walk normally.
Iden said that his 79-year-old father, who had suffered from health problems in recent years, had become “very fragile in terms of movement (…), which caused his suffering from a type of depression.”
France Presse quoted Pele’s son in an interview published by the Brazilian Globo Sporty website. Just imagine that he – the king – has always had a strong personality, and now he cannot walk normally. He is ashamed and feels embarrassed about it.
Pele is one of the best, if not the best, players in history, and he is the only one to have won the World Cup three times (1958, 1962 and 1970), after a triumphant march in which he scored more than a thousand goals.
Pele suffered from health problems during the past years that led him to the hospital on several occasions, and he did not fully recover from surgery on his hip, which forced him to rely on a device that helps him walk, according to Edino.
“He’s been doing better than he did in the wheelchair recently, but he’s still suffering,” he said.
