PlayStation 5 Sales Exceed 20 Million
Sony’s New Generation PlayStation 5 sales have surpassed the 20 million unit barrier since its launch in
November 2020. This was confirmed by an official statement from Sony Entertainment today.
Demand for Sony’s new device has been very high since its launch in November 2020, and without this global
shortage of components, it would have reached this milestone much earlier.
Sony seeks to improve its 5 PlayStation sales by providing sufficient quantities to cover demand.
Sony is back today confirming that it plans to “significantly increase” the production of the PlayStation 5 during
the remainder of this year 2022.
Veronica Rogers, Senior Vice President, Head of Global Sales and Business Operations, Sony Interactive
Entertainment, citing GamesIndustry.biz, said:
We are pleased to share that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has managed to sell over 20 million
PlayStation 5 consoles globally.
Since the launch of PlayStation 5, our teams have worked tirelessly to introduce a next-generation gaming console
that has truly won the world’s satisfaction, and we want to dedicate this time to thank fans for their support.
Your passion for the PlayStation brand is what drives and inspires us to create new technology,
engineer the future of gaming, and continue to create the best place to play.
As for the lack of access to the PlayStation 5 so far, I assured Rogers that Sony would do its utmost to get
everyone on the device as soon as possible.
For fans who have not yet got their hands on the machine, please know that we plan to significantly increase the
production of PlayStation 5 this year and work endlessly to make sure the device is available to everyone who
wants one.
Earlier, Sony made a striking comparison in a recent presentation on the future of the PlayStation brand and the
current status of home appliances sales.
In the United States, at this point in the life cycle of the current PlayStation devices, PlayStation 4 sold more than
80,000 units in 9 days. The PlayStation 5 sold more than 80,000 units in about 82 minutes.
This means that 6 PlayStation 4 devices are sold almost per minute, while 1,000 PlayStation 5 devices are sold
per minute. Sony also reviewed a graph on “buying interest” for PlayStation devices one year after launch where
PlayStation 4 has 28% and while PlayStation 5 has 55%.
