Ronaldo issues a statement on Instagram and talks about the “hot of the moment”
Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo said that he will continue
to make an effort with his team and that he will return to his ranks soon,
after the club announced that the Don would not be on his list for the next match.
The substitute Ronaldo, who did not participate in Wednesday’s 2-0 win
over Tottenham Hotspur, headed to the dressing room tunnel a few minutes
before the end of the match after coach Eric Ten Hag left him again on the bench.
Ten Hag said after the match that he would deal with the incident on Thursday,
noting that his focus was on the team.
“Cristiano Ronaldo will not be part of the Manchester United squad for
the Premier League match against Chelsea on Saturday,” the statement read.
Ronaldo’s behavior on Wednesday sparked criticism, with former Manchester United
goalkeeper Petersmichael considering the 37-year-old becoming a distraction at Old Trafford.
“I have always tried to set an example for the young players in all the clubs
I represented,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram late Thursday.
“Unfortunately, this is not always possible and sometimes the heat of the moment
can overwhelm you,” he added.
“Right now, I feel I have to keep working hard at Carrington, support my teammates
and prepare for anything in any game.”
“Capturing to pressure is not an option. It was not an option. This is Manchester United
and we must remain united. Soon we will be together again.”
The Portuguese international scored 24 goals in all competitions with
Manchester United last season, when he returned to the English club for a second
period from Juventus, but he participated mainly in only two games this season in the league.
Ronaldo, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, scored his 700th career goal in United’s
victory over Everton this month, in a new achievement in his career in which
he won many titles.
Ronaldo, who won the Premier League three times and the Champions League
once during his first spell with the club, helped Portugal win Euro 2016.
And the media reported that Ronaldo is about to leave Old Trafford in the summer,
but Ten Hag said that it is part of his plans for the current season.
United is fifth with 19 points, one point behind fourth-placed Chelsea, after ten games.
