Sevilla, a lover of the European Football League, qualified for
the final again after substitute Luc de Jong scored in the 78th
minute to give the Spanish team a 2-1 victory over Manchester United.
United, who lost in the FA Cup and Professional Club Cup
semi-finals, seemed to be on track to break their jints when
Bruno Fernandez opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the ninth minute.
But former Liverpool player Soso equalized in the 26th minute
and the Spanish team showed their usual prowess in the
tournament to deal with United’s pressure in the match in Cologne.
Yassin Bono starred and saved Sevilla several times, and when
United’s forces chose De Jong to snatch the winning goal.
Sevilla will play in the final in Cologne against the winner from
Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk, where the Spanish team will
try to clinch their sixth title in the tournament since 2006.
While Sevilla saved the face of Spanish football, United’s defeat
ended the bad season for English teams in the continental
championships after they dominated the final two matches of
the Champions League and the European League last season.
United were the only English team in the semi-finals of the two
continental championships this season after Manchester City’s
exit against Olympique Lyon in the Champions League quarter-finals.
